The Business Environment in the Greater Bay Area
The Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area, also simply known as the Greater Bay Area (GBA), is a megalopolis with the largest and most populated urban area among the four largest bay areas in the world. It consists of nine cities in China's Guangdong Province, being Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Huizhou, Jiangmen & Zhaoqing, as well as the two special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macao. The total population is 86 million people, or 5% of China's total, and is expected to rach 100 million by 2030. Since the announcement of the outline GBA development plan in 2019, the total GDP of the area has surpassed 13 trillion yuan. Already today, GBA is not only a huge and dynamic consumer market, but also a critical export hub accounting 37 % of China's exports. The GBA infrastructure includes five international airports, advanced high-speed railway connections, and three of the World's top ten container ports.

In December 2023, China revealed a three-year action plan for the GBA focusing on increasing openness in Mainland China's financial sector with the intention of enhancing the market environment in the GBA. The plan envisions simplified market entry procedures and institutional barrier elimination in order to reduce costs and promote a sound ecosystem for business and intends to ease regulatory standards potentially boosting the attractiveness of the GBA for foreign enterprises.

While the regulations and integration of the area are only starting to take shape these years, the GBA is envisioned by Chinese Government planners to become an integrated economic area by 2035.

  • Reporting on supply chain emissions due to EU regulations.
  • Potential market opportunities for emission reducing technologies.

Dealing with Risks in China

Dealing with Risks in China

Date: February 09, 2023

Time: 9:30 - 10:30 CET

Event: Webinar

Soft launch of the report “Sino-Danish Tech Collaboration”

DCBF invites members to this online network meeting, organized by Sense China, where the report Sino-Danish Technology Collaboration will be launched. The report is a result of the China Tech project, a collaboration between Danish-Chinese Business Forum, the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences, Sense China, and the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research.

Working in China is becoming a riskier affair for Danish companies. They are confronted with challenges across a wide spectrum of issues, from geopolitical tensions to human rights concerns. Public opinion in Denmark is adding to the pressure. Critical media coverage and tough political rhetoric are making commercial decisions more difficult to defend.

This online network meeting, organized by Sense China, examines the topic of risk management in China. Several Danish company representatives will share experiences in a confidential setting, focusing on two themes:

  • How to manage operations in a politically sensitive environment?
  • How to align business opportunities with different social values?

If you are interested in participating, please do not hesistate to contact us at info@dcbf.dk

Report Launch: Sino-Danish Technology Collaboration

At the online network meeting, a new report will also be launched: Sino-Danish Technology Collaboration.

Throughout the past 10-15 years, many Danish companies and institutions have established relations with China as well as Chinese partners. These relations are today challenged by geopolitical tensions and national priorities in Beijing, Brussels, and Washington. However, technology collaboration with China creates value and is a global necessity in terms of climate change, green transition, and fighting pandemics.

This report introduces the context, potential, forms of collaboration, and ways to manage the risks associated with technology collaboration. It is prepared specifically with small and medium-sized Danish technology companies in mind and aims to help them work more confidently with existing or potential China-based partners.

Sino-Danish Technology Collaboration is a result of the China Tech project, which the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV) coordinated alongside a working group consisting of the Danish-Chinese Business Forum (DCBF), Sense China (Danish Confederation of Industries), and the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research. The Laurits Andersen Foundation provided financial support to the China Tech initiative and the report.

Europe China Business Covid 2023

European Business in China Post-2022 - The View from the Ground

Date: January 12, 2023

Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (CET)

Event: Supported Webinar

2022 has been a turbulent year for the EU and China. Both actors have had to deal with multiple shocks, including the war in Ukraine and the resulting energy and food security crises, economic headwinds and inflation, and an unstable geopolitical environment. In the case of China, an increasingly unsustainable zero-COVID policy and a property crisis have added to the complexities in an already politically pivotal year for the Chinese leadership, with the 20th Party Congress taking place in October. The China at the beginning of 2023 – no longer with COVID-zero and with a new leadership – is certainly very different from the China in early 2022. European companies' conversations in China now are not the same as in January 2022. Indeed, from the perspective of European companies in China, the shift in Chinese policymaking – partly as a result of these and other trends towards prioritizing ideology over the economy – has led to China's business environment becoming less predictable, reliable and efficient. Although opportunities for European companies in China remain, they must develop strategies to deal with an ever-growing list of risks stemming from geopolitical developments and emerging legislation both within and outside China.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from European business representatives operating on the ground in China what the key drivers behind these trends in China are and their implications for European business.

Programme:
10.00 - 10.30: Registration (offline attendees only)
10.30 - 10.40: Opening remarks by Ms Luisa Santos, Deputy Director General, BusinessEurope
10.40 - 11.00: Presentation of the current business environment in China by Mr Joerg Wuttke, President, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China
11.00 - 11.40: Panel discussion moderated by Mr Davide Cucino, Brussels Representative, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China with industry representatives from the European Chamber:

  • Mr Zhonghua Xu – Chair Energy Working Group – TotalEnergies
  • Mr Raphael de Garnier – Chair Pharma Working Group – Sanofi
  • Ms Susan Gao – Vice-Chair Banking and Securities Working Group – Landesbank
  • Ms Renata Pavlov – Member State Representative and member of the Maritime Manufacturing Working Group – Fincantieri

Compliance and transparency are hard to implement and fully control in China, which is why the area frequently hides untapped and substantial business potential.

Through actual cases, experiences, and results, Søren will take us through the benefits of applying enhanced compliance measures and fully integrate them in general business strategies. The presentation will include examples and causes, where standard compliance measures failed to uncover existing risks and which had a significant impact on the business.

The cases presented will be from big and small organizations within various areas, such as finance, sourcing, quality, supply chain, logistics, admin, and HR.
